China's GFI hires CIO

Chen is responsible for formulating investment strategies, including those for the firm’s absolute return and Hong Kong equity capabilities.

Previously, Chen was a senior portfolio manager at Value Partners. Before that, he worked for China Life Franklin Asset Management, Baillie Gifford Investment Management and China Life Asset Management, where he managed the Hong Kong equity and A-share portfolios.

Chen reports to Tom Ding, who is the CEO of GFI. Ding had been serving concurrently as both CEO and CIO and will now continue as CEO to focus on expansion of the China and overseas buisnesses, the firm said in a statement.

“Chen’s extensive knowledge and experience not only further strengthen GFI’s capabilities, but also demonstrates our commitment to providing comprehensive investment services to investors,” Ding said.

In a move to expand its business in Hong Kong, GFI said in May that it plans to launch absolute return funds that have a global investment mandate.
